Biography: Richard Johns was born in 1805 in Helston, the son of army officer William Johns. He joined the Royal Marines Light Infantry and rose to the rank of major before his retirement. After his service, he wrote two works of fiction, a collection of stories Legend and Romance (1839) and a novel The Schoolfellows. He died on 6 November 1851 in the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth.
