Author: John Berwick Harwood (1829–1899)

Biography: John Berwick Harwood was born on 7 January 1829 in Madras (Chennai), the son of East India Company army officer John Harwood and his wife Olivia Halliday Parry Crooke. Both parents came from wealthy landed gentry. As an infant, his father died and he and his mother returned to England. He was raised in Kent and Wales. He attended Tonbridge School and Worcester College, Oxford. Harwood was called to the bar but never practiced. Instead, he turned to literature beginning with a collection of poems and continuing with contributions to periodicals. Eventually, he went on to publish a score of novels. In 1850, he married Emily Mary Worsop Trollope, the daughter of Bernard Trollope, in Ostend. The couple traveled widely and lived most of their lives abroad, mainly in Boulogue sur Mer. He died on 15 February 1899 in Chertsey. Note: the entry in Sutherland is out of date; the article by Neacey is the most complete biography.
