Biography: Emily Bickersteth was born on 2 August 1828 in Islington, the daughter of clergyman the Rev. Edward Bickersteth and his wife Sarah (née Bignold). Her only brother eventually became the Bishop of Exeter. Her father worked for the Christian Missionary Society and she would also later work for the organization including a stint in India in the 1890s. As a young woman, she wrote a few fiction titles aimed at young adult readers. In 1867, she married clergyman the Rev. Isaac Durrant, one-time vicar of Thornton and director of the C. M. S. Children's Home. The couple had several children. She died on 16 January 1911 in Hampstead.
