Biography: Philip Norton was born in 1841 in London, perhaps in St. John's Wood but more likely in the more humble Stepney. He was the son of inland revenue officer William Norton and his wife Esther. He was educated at Spring-hill College, Birmingham and became a congregational minister. After a few years, he switched to the Church of England with whom he served as curate of Blackheath and rector of Brandon Parva. In 1871, he married Louisa Jane Edmonds and the couple had several children. Norton was the author of several books, including a science fiction novel Sub Sole (1890) published under the pseudonym "Artegall Smith." He died on 4 January 1924 in Norwich.
