Biography: Jane Mary Fowler Smith was born around 1836 in Bloomsbury, the eldest daughter of John L. Dampier and his wife Margaret. Her father was the vice-warden of the Stannaries of Devon and Cornwall. In 1873, she married the Rev. Alfred Fowler Smith, the rector of St. Mary's in Thetford, Norfolk. Her husband died in 1891, after which she changed her name to "Smith-Dampier" in 1898. She lived in Winchester where she died in December 1906. She only wrote the single novel, published anonymously.
