Biography: Mary Elizabeth Gellie was born in 1838 in Lambeth, the daughter of chief clerk for the Admiralty John Marlett Boddy. In 1877, she married Scottish landowner William Gellie. The couple had a single daughter who died as an infant. Before and after her marriage, Gellie wrote several novels aimed at young adult readers. She died on 14 February 1919 in Aberdeen.
