Author: William Knighton (1833–1900)

Biography: William Knighton was born in 1824 in Dublin, the son of Richard I. Knighton. He was educated in Glasgow before going out to Ceylon then Calcutta as a schoolmaster. While in India, he edited a newspaper and began writing a series of books about India. Returning to Europe, he earned an M.A., Ph.D., and LL.D. from Giessen University. In later life, he wrote and advocated against slums. Knighton married twice and died in 1900.
