Biography: Michael Rafter was born on 9 February 1792 in Tipperary, Ireland, the son of Thomas Rafter. He joined the army as an ensign in 1809 and rose to be paymaster of the 95th regiment before retiring in 1834. Some of his service was spent in India. Thereafter, he contributed to the press and wrote several books including two novels. He married and had at least four sons. He died at the home of his son in Coventry on 29 March 1856.
