Author: John Knox Stallybrass (1823–1879)
Biography: John Knox Stallybrass was born on 27 May 1823 in Siberia, the son of missionary Edward Stallybrass (1794–1884). He spent his early years growing up in Russia with his siblings before being sent home for school. He attended Glasgow University before becoming a minister himself. After three years as a missionary in Russia he returned to England and served as a minister in Dorchester, Bridport, Birmingham, and Putney. In 1855, he married Sophia Barnicott and had at least two sons. In the late 1860s, he retired from his ministry and wrote two novels set in Russia. Though published anonymously, his identity was revealed by his publisher in an advertisement and on the cover of his second novel. He died on 8 November 1879 in Shooters Hill, Kent.
