Biography: Clara Lucy Emily Cox was born in 1845 in London, the eldest daughter of Rev. Dr. John Edmund Cox (1812–1890), the author of Musical Recollections of the Last Half-Century (1872). She and her sisters lived in London where they were educated at home. In midlife, she wrote a novel Was it a Marriage? (1875) under the pseudonym "Karl Hähne." Though it was well received, she never followed it up. Instead, she attended Cambridge and afterwards became the mistress of a high school. She never married and lived the majority of her life with her parents or siblings. Cox died in December 1931 in Dover.
