Author: Elizabeth Eaves Griffin (1846–1899)
Alternate Name(s): Elliott Graeme (pseudonym)
Biography: Elizabeth Eaves Griffin was born around 1846 in Scotland, the daughter of publisher Charles Griffin. The family lived in Glasgow but in 1859 moved to London. From an early age, she interested herself in her father's work. As a young woman, she wrote a biography Beethoven: A Memoir (1870) and a novel A Novel with Two Heroes (1872) under the pseudonym "Elliott Graeme." Thereafter, Griffin devoted her attention to publishing books, not writing them. According to a history of the firm, Elizabeth "proved the most capable of the children left by Mr. Charles Griffin [and] she soon became the acknowledged head" of the company. She initiated several innovations in the company, most notably an emphasis on scientific works. She never married and died on 6 February 1899 in Bexhill-on-Sea.
