Biography: James Hutchings was born around 1808 in Banbury. His early life cannot be traced. He took an active interest in his native town: he founded the Banbury Mechanics' Institute and edited the Banbury Herald for many years. He devoted much of his time to painting (mostly landscapes and still lifes) and writing. Among the latter, he wrote two novels, the first written under the pseudonym "Harry Neville" and the second under his legal name. Hutchings married and had two children. After a year-long illness, he died on 8 February 1881 in Banbury.
