Alternate Name(s): Frank Harkut (pseudonym)

Biography: Frank Oscar Karuth was born around 1837 in Prussia, the son of merchant Frank Karuth. He seems to have also become a businessman, spending time in Australia and South Africa. In particular, he had an interest in the Philipines. At the same time, he made a good living as a literary and general journalist, earning about £800 per year (according to him). He also "edited" a novel, The Conspirator (1890). In 1870, Karuth married Mary Silberberg and the couple had two children. In 1905, after losing his sight, he was forced to apply for bankruptcy. He died in 1908.
