Biography: Julia Chandler was born on 29 September 1844 in Malling, Kent, the daughter of innkeeper John Carrick. In 1865, she married draper Thomas Chandler and the couple had two sons. During her married life, Chandler began a successful writing career beginning with humorous stories for Figaro. Her short story "A Night with a Baby" (1873) became a popular recitation. She went on write fiction and contribute to Sylvia's Home Journal as "Cricket." Chandler died of consumption while visiting family in May 1880 in Hastings. A promising literary career cruelly cut short.
