Author: Cuthbert Barmby (1865–1927)

Biography: Cuthbert Barney Barmby was born on 30 May 1865 in Durham, the son of clergyman James Barmby and his wife Katherine Elizabeth (née Wood). He attended Charterhouse School. In 1888, he traveled to the United States where he lived and worked on the west coast for several years. In 1890, he married Frances Mary Isabella Wharton in San Diego. By 1901, the couple moved back to Europe settling in Calais. While in America, Barmby contributed stories to several English magazines, including Pearson's Magazine and Windsor Magazine. He wrote the single detective novel James Cope (1899). Most of his fiction is set in or around California. He died on 8 February 1927 in Kent.
