Biography: Captain Edward Stratton Fitzhardinge Berkeley was born on 16 July 1827 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, the son of the politician and novelist Hon. George Charles Grantley Fitzhardinge Berkeley and his wife Caroline Martha (née Benfield). He was the grandson of the fifth Earl of Berkeley. In 1851, he joined the Royal South Battalion of Gloucester Light Infantry as a lieutenant and was promoted to captain in 1853. In 1860, he joined the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards. He penned the single novel The Soldier-Monk (1862). The title of his book may describe his own life: he never married and died a soldier on 29 May 1878.
