Biography: Sophie Argent Mitchell was born in 1855 in Colchester, the only child of the German oculist Nardus Gluckstein and his wife Mary Jane. The family split time between Colchester and south London. In 1880, she married the businessman Josiah Thomas Mitchell and the couple had four children. She wrote the single novel Settling Day (1884) under the thinly-veiled pen name "Sophie Argent." The Mitchells lived a comfortable life in Croydon and later Reigate. She died on 24 April 1922 in Reigate.
