Biography: Edmund White was born on 6 July 1844 in Islington. His early life cannot be traced. For many years he was a civil servant in the colonial Indian government. When he retired, he moved to Lewes where he was active in local government. In addition, he turned his hand to fiction beginning with the India-set Bijli the Dancer (1898). His first novel was under the pseudonym "James Blythe Patton" but he dropped it for his subsequent novels. He married but does not appeared to have had any children. He died on 28 February 1918 in Lewes.
