Biography: Evan Rowland Jones was born in 1840 near Tregaron, Wales, the son of William Jones and his wife Mary (née Rowlands). At the age of fifteen, Jones went to America where he organized an anti-slavery society in Milwaukee. When the American Civil War broke out, he enlisted and rose to the rank of major. After the war, President Grant named him an American consul and he served in Newcastle and later in Cardiff. While back in his native Wales, he was elected a Member of Parliament (1892–1895). He wrote a memoir of his time in the U. S. Army as well as a novel Una Montgomery (1881) under the pseudonym "Cartmel King." He was also the proprietor and editor of the Shipping World (begun 1883). In 1867, he married Kate Alice Evans and the couple had no children. He died on 16 January 1920 in Hampstead.
