Biography: Jane Sergeant was born about 1818 in Pockington, Yorkshire, the daughter of Wesleyan minister Thomas Hall. In 1840, she married the Methodist minister Richard A. Sergeant and the couple lived in Jamaica where her husband served as a missionary in the 1840s. She was the mother of novelist Adeline Sergeant. Under the pseudonyn "Adeline," Sergeant published several collections of poetry and a handful of novels in addition to contributing to periodicals. Her husband died in December 1870 in Rochester and she died on 1 April 1872 in London.
