Biography: Clarisse L. Matéaux was born around 1836 in Chelsea. Her early life cannot be traced, but her father was a Frenchman. By the 1870s, she lived in London working as an author of juvenile fiction and an editor of magazines for Cassell. She never married and died after a two-day illness on 3 October 1911 in Islington. Her death notice added "best known to her friends as 'Mattie'."
