Biography: Esther Charlotte Anne Allen was born on 12 October 1832 in Alport, Derbyshire, the daughter of Francis Alsop and his wife Charlotte. In 1859, she married schoolmaster Jonas Allen and the couple lived in Bury where they ran a school together. Allen published one collection of poetry and a single novel The Westons of Riverdale (1869) which advocated her ardent temperance views. She died suddenly on 12 May 1886 in Bury less than a year after her husband.
