Author: Edward Burlend (1813–1875)

Biography: Edward Burlend was born in 1813 in Yorkshire, the son of farmer and schoolmaster John Burlend and his wife Rebecca Burton. As he termed it, he was "brought up at the plough" until eighteen years old before becoming a schoolteacher. In 1831, his parents along with his younger siblings emigrated to Illinois. Burlend remained behind and became master of Swillington school, Yorkshire. In 1839, he married Hannah Watson. On a return visit in 1846, Edward's mother wrote with his assistance the pamphlet A True Picture of Emigration, an important early account of American frontier life. Burlend went on to publish a collection of poems and the single novel Amy Thornton (1862) which enjoyed much enduring success in Yorkshire. He died on 4 June 1875 in Swillington.
