Biography: Robert Douglas Clephane was born on 10 January 1821 in Edinburgh, the son of Andrew Clephane, the Sherrif of Fifeshire. He entered the army and served in the 79th Highlanders. He rose throught the ranks, eventually retiring as a Lt-Colonel in 1857. He saw action in the Crimean War and participated in the battles of Alma, Balaclava, and Sevastopol. In retirement, he wrote a long poem about Sebastopol and a novel. In 1855, he married Anne Laurie Pirie Smith and the couple had four children. Clephane died on 3 February 1887 in Strathendry, Fife.
