Biography: Jane Mill was born on 21 September 1843 in Tavistock, the daughter of physician and author John Mill and his wife Eleanor. Her early life cannot be traced, but in her twenties she began writing beginning with Dan's Treasure (1866) under the pseudonym "Leigh Tempest." In 1878, she married academic Charles Faulke-Watling. Their marriage was shortlived, ending with the death of husband in 1883. Beginning before her marriage and continuing after, Mill applied successfully to the Royal Literary Fund over ten times. She never remarried and died in 1927 in Tendring, Essex.
