Biography: Jane Sarson Cooper Ingham was born on 5 April 1844 in Old Perlican, Bay de Verde, Newfoundland, the eldest child of Wesleyan minister Jabez Ingham and his wife Mary Fletcher. Early in her life, the family returned to England living first in Masham, Yorkshire then Newbury, Berkshire. At a young age, she published two collections of poetry before turning to fiction under the pseudonym "Sarson C. J. Ingham" (a fairly transparent reordering of her legal name). In addition to writing, she also worked as a teacher. Ingham never married and lived with her family all her life. She died on 5 July 1906 in Newbury.
