Author: Charles Kearns Deane Tanner (1849–1901)

Alternate Name(s): Mark Tanner (pseudonym)

Biography: Charles Kearns Deane Tanner was born on 20 September 1849 in Cork, the son of surgeon William Kearns Deane Tanner. He followed his father into medicine by studying in Paris, Winchester, Queen's College, Cork, and the Universities of Leipzig and Berlin. In 1885, he was elected to Parliament for Mid Cork and he proved to be pugnacious advocate for Home Rule. Tanner married in 1888 Elizabeth A. M'Donnell. That same year, he published his only work Gerald Grantley's Revenge under the transparent pseudonym "Mark Tanner" (in fact, advertisements noted the author was a doctor and M.P.). In 1889, he was briefly imprisoned for assault on a county-inspector. His later years were marked by poor health and he died of consumption on 21 April 1901 at the Great Western Hotel in Reading.
