Author: Laura A. S. Carew (1867–1945)
Alternate Name(s): Laura Augusta Susan Carew (maiden name); Breakey (married name)
Biography: Laura Augusta Susan Carew was born in 1867 in Kingskerswell, Devon, the youngest daughter of Henry Carew and his wife Susan (née Symes). As a young woman, she wrote a novel My Destiny (1886) but does not appear to have followed it up. In 1887, she married army officer Arthur John Breakey and the couple had three children. She lived for many years in the Portsmouth area before returning to her native Devon. Her latter years appear to be ones of struggle: the 1939 register show her an inmate in a mental institution. She died on 31 January 1945 in Exminster, Devon.
