Author: John Sherer

Author: John Sherer (1810–1889)

Biography: John Sherer was born on 13 September 1810 in Edinburgh, the son of Alexander Sherer. He moved south where he worked as a compositor and printer in Penzance and London before becoming an author himself. He mainly wrote educational works such as the Dictionary of Universal Information (1859–1864). Added to this, he was a successful temperance lecturer. He married and had a least two children, including actress Alice Stirling. Sherer applied numerous times to the Royal Literary Fund and his applications paint a portrait of an author writing himself to death. In 1881, he was an inmate in Suttons Hospital, Holborn. Thereafter, he cannot be traced. Sherer died before 1895, most likely in 1889.
