Author: Louisa Simonds (1806–1870)

Biography: Louisa Simonds was born about 1806 in London, the daughter of solicitor James Simonds. She and her elder sisters Sarah and Mary were well-educated but left to struggle after the death of their father. The three sisters kept a day-school in Shoreditch for nearly forty years. Late in life, Simonds wrote a novel Aunt Esther and her Umbrella (1863). By the mid 1860s the three sisters were struggling financially and physically with much of the household responsibility falling on the youngest sister Louisa. Local clergymen appealed sucessfully for support for the sisters. They all died within a few years of each other, with Louisa dying in 1870 in London.
