Alternate Name(s): John Frederic Matthias Harris Stone (legal name)
Biography: A man of varied interests. John Frederic Matthias Harris Stone was born on 2 September 1853 in Bath, the son of John Stone and his wife Louisa Harris. He attended Clifton College and earned a degree from St. Peter's College, Cambridge. In 1878, he married Olivia Mary Hartrick and the couple had three sons. His wife suffered from poor health, so the couple traveled to warmer climes then settled in St. Margaret's Bay, Kent. Thereafter, Stone seems to have thrown himself into photography. He founded a photography club as well as the magazine Amateur Photographer in 1884 which he edited for several years. Around this time, he co-wrote a thriller The Nihilist Napoleon (1885). Though he continued to write books, he eschewed fiction. Later, he was called to the bar, but it does not appear he practiced. In 1907, he founded the Caravan Club. Records show he took an interest in local affairs, first in St. Margaret's Bay then in Finchley. After the death of his first wife, he remarried to Lily Tully in 1900. Stone died on 11 January 1939 in Finchley.
