Biography: Eliza Warmington Payne was born on 15 October 1815 in London, the daughter of businessman Robert Giles Marten and his wife Eliza Warmington. Her grandfather was the notable businessman Robert Humphrey Marten. In 1842, she married chemist Alfred Payne and the couple had seven children. The family moved to Edgbaston then Wolverhampton. As a married woman, she wrote books for young adult readers including several novels. She died on 16 January 1877 near Wolverhampton.
