Biography: Margaret Elizabeth Poole was born on 20 March 1839 in Bridgwater, the daughter of solicitor and farmer Gabriel Stone Poole and his wife Maria. In her early thirties, she began writing fiction with Without a Character (1870) about a servant. A few years later, she married clergyman Henry Ryder Poole Sandford, the inspector for schools in Sheffield then Oxford. Poole continued writing after her marriage, including fiction and a memoir of Thomas Poole. Her husband died in 1883 and she became a school headmistress in Chester. She died after complication from surgery on 9 January 1903 in London.
