Author: Frederick Ross (1816–1893)

Biography: Frederick Ross was born on 21 June 1816 in Beverley, the son of wine merchant Charles Ross. He was apprenticed to a Beverley linen draper before moving to work in London trade. On the side, he began contributing to periodicals and writing historical works. For a projected biographical dictionary of Yorkshire he accummulated over thirty years a several-foot high pile of manuscripts. In addition to nonfiction, he wrote the single novel Life Behind the Counter (1864) which drew upon his life in a shop. He never married and died on 14 January 1893 at his sisters' house in Driffield.
