Author: Hon. Hugh Rowley (1833–1908)
Biography: Hon. Hugh Rowley was born on 18 June 1833 in London, the youngest son of Hercules Langford Rowley, 2nd Baron Langford and his wife Louisa Augusta (née Rhodes). He attended Eton and Sandhurst and briefly served in the 16th Dragoons. Instead of an army career, he dedicated himself to art and literature. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and wrote several works of light literature including Puniana (1870) and its sequel. Notably, he played cricket for the Gentlemen of Sussex and was the first private owner of a hansom cab in London. He married twice: the first marriage to Theresa Caroline Bishop ended in divorce; and the second to Caroline Frances Green in 1874. A thirty year resident of Brighton, he died there on 12 Mary 1908.
