Author: Alexander Whamond (1828–1896)
Biography: Alexander Whamond was born in 1828 in Tannadice, the son of shoemaker John Whamond and his wife Betty Carnegie. He moved to Dalziel and became the headmaster of the parish school, a position he held for 43 years. In addition he wrote poetry, fiction, and history. For a time he was the register of births for the parish and editor of the Hamilton Advertiser newspaper. He married though the couple had no children. He died on 1 May 1896 in Motherwell. Several Scottish newspapers wrote laudatory pieces after his death.
