Biography: Sir Charles Cavendish Clifford was born on 7 January 1821, the third son of Sir A. W. J. Clifford, baronet. He was educated at Charterhouse and Oxford University before being called to the bar. He was the private secretary to Palmerston then was elected to Parliament for the Isle of Wight and Newport. Under the pseudonym "Umbra" he wrote several books including one work of fiction. Late in life, he succeeded his brother. He died on 22 November 1895 in Ryde.
