Biography: William Robert Ancketill was born on 31 March 1820 in Normandy, the son of Irish landowner William Anketell (his son would revert to the older "Ancketill" spelling by deed in 1874). He attended Trinity College, Dublin. It appears he followed no profession but that of landed gentleman, living at Quintin Castle, Co. Down and acting at J. P. In 1844, he married Madelina Selina Ker and the couple had seven children. In the 1870s, Ancketill wrote two Irish-set novels and four shorter political works (the latter under the pseudonym "Scrutator"). Ancketill died on 9 March 1889 in London.
