Biography: Sidney Mary Beckwith Sitwell was born on 26 May 1839 in Hulme, the daughter of army officer John Alexander Wilson and Marion Balfour. Through her mother she was first cousins with authors Robert Louis Stevenson and Marie Clothilde Balfour. In 1869, she married merchant Isla Ashley Sitwell in Yokohama, Japan and the couple had three sons (all born in Japan). By the late 1870s, the family returned to England where her husband died in 1880. On her return to England, Sitwell turned her hand briefly to juvenile fiction. She never remarried and retired to Bournemouth where she died on 19 February 1908.
