Biography: Louisa Saumarez Hawtrey was born on 18 March 1853 in Rimpton, Dorset, the daughter of clergyman Montague Hawtrey, the rector of Rimpton. In her teens, she wrote two historical novels, Castle Cornet (1872) and Brave Dame Mary (1873). The former is set in Guernsey where she was living in 1871 with her grandmother. She went on to write a successful cookbook for children. In 1877, she married army officer Charles William Henry Tate and the couple had three daughters. Her husband died in 1901 as a result of the war in South Africa. Late in life she emigrated to Australia. Hawtrey died on 11 February 1935 in Sydney.
