Biography: Nancy R. E. Bell was born in 1844 in Lambeth, the daughter of colonial broker Peter Joseph Meugens. As a young woman, she wrote juvenile fiction beginning with Robert's Holidays (1875) under the pseudonym "N. D'Anvers." In 1882, she married artist Arthur George Bell and the couple had three children. During her married life, Bell continued to write fiction but shifted decidedly to works of art history under her legal name. She died on 30 August 1933 in Bristol.
