Biography: Edwin John Ellis was born about 1849 in Bath, the son of noted philologist Alexander John Ellis. He trained and worked as a painter. In particular, he shared a London studio with John Butler Yeats, the father of poet W. B. Yeats. Ellis wrote the juvenile novel Doda's Birthday (1873) as well as several poems. He married a German woman and the couple had no children. In the midst of the war, he died on 11 November 1916 in Seckmauern, Germany. Likely, he was visiting his wife or her family.
