Author: Daniel Gorrie (1831–1893)
Biography: Daniel Gorrie was born on 17 June 1831 in Kettle, the son of United Presbyterian minister Daniel Gorrie. His elder brother was the West Indian jurist Sir John Gorrie. He trained for the ministry and was a probationer for a time, but ultimately turned his career to literature. For several years he edited the Orkney Herald before settling in London as an editor and journalist. In addition, Gorrie wrote a travel book Summers and Winters in the Orkneys (1869), a novel Geordie Purdie in London (1873), and poetry. In 1861, he married Anne Munroe and the couple had seven children. Gorrie died on 16 September 1893 in London.
