Biography: Mary Hooper was born in 1829 in Leamington Spa, the daughter of Methodist minister Frederick William Hooper. At a young age she was encouraged by S. C. Hall to become a writer and she went on to be a noted cooking and household expert. For a time she was a sub-editor of Household Words in charge of the magazine's household content. She went on to write several cooking and household management books as well as fiction. In 1874, she took a position as a professor of domestic economy at the Crystal Palace School of Arts, Science and Literature. When her sister died in 1860, Hooper lived with her brother-in-law Charles Wentworth Wass as his housekeeper, continuing in the role until her death. Hooper never married and died on 8 January 1904 in Upper Norwood.
