Biography: Thomas Aloysius Finlay was born on 6 July 1848 in Lanesborough, Ireland, the son of William Finlay and his wife Maria Magan. He was educated at Cavan College, St. Acheul in France, and Gregorian University in Rome. In 1866, he joined the Society of Jesus and in 1881 he was ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic church. Finlay held a number of positions including rector of Belvedere College, professor at University College Dublin, and other government posts. In addition to his duties, he wrote articles and books, including fiction under the pseudonym "A. Whitelock." He died on 8 January 1940 in Dublin.
