Biography: Maria Louisa Birkinshaw was born around 1826 in Bradford, Wiltshire, the daughter of auctioneer and ironmonger George Rolf. In 1851, she married commission agent George Peter Birkinshaw. Based on her single novel The Chevaliers (1860) set in Virginia, the couple spent some time in America. On their return to England they lived in Gateshead with her brother. Birkinshaw's husband died in 1874 and she followed in 1877.
