Author: Georgina Alicia Colmache (1811–1904)
Biography: Georgina Alicia Colmache was born in 1811 in Bloomsbury of English parents. Her early life cannot be traced. She was educated in France and married in 1830 Edouard Maurice Colmache of the French Embassy and private secretary to Prince Talleyrand. The couple had four children. Left a widow at 34 years old, she brought up and educated her children by the aid of her journalistic pen. Colmache was a prolific contributor to English and French periodicals—in particular, she contributed a weekly column to the Birmingham Daily Post for forty years. In addition to her journalism, she wrote two novels. According to her obituary, "her ready wit and singularly happy manner made her society much esteemed during her middle life" and she counted on a wide circle of friends including Thackeray, George Sand, Rossini, Chopin, Dickens, Dumas, and many others. She died in January 1904 at her daughter's home in London. Her granddaughter was the actress Rosina Filippi.
