Biography: Charles Rampini was born in 1840 in Edinburgh. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University before being called to the bar in 1866. Two years later he was appointed a judge in Jamaica and served in several offices before he retired from the colonial service in 1877. Subsequently he was appointed Sheriff-Substitute of Orkney and Shetland where he established himself as a popular and able leader. Later he served in similar positions in Elgin, Nairn, and Inverness and Dumfries and Galloway. He was the author of two volumes of Scottish history, a volume of law reports, and several novels, the latter written under the pseudonyn "George Temple." Rampini was a noted antiquarian and he contributed to periodicals. Poor health compelled him to retire. He died in July 1907 in Paignton, Devon.
