Biography: William Bernard Barker was born in 1846 in Erpingham, Norfolk, the son of bank manager Richard Barker. A graduate of New College, Oxford, he worked as a journalist and editor of the Bazaar and Exchange and Mart. He also wrote a single novel, Eliot the Younger (1878). While on holiday in Norfolk, he waded into a pond "while heated" and caught a fatal chill. He died on 13 September 1882 leaving a wife.
