Biography: John Joseph Henry Greer was born on 24 March 1841 in Dublin. His early life cannot be traced. He married in Ireland and had ten children. In the 1870s, he and his family moved to Hampstead where he worked as a journalist and author. According to his application to the Royal Literary Fund, he struggled financially, suffering at least one bankruptcy. The RLF found his claim insufficient. Greer wrote one novel, A Life's Hazard (1878), under the pseudonym "Henry Esmond." He died in 1898 in Hampstead.
